How to clean fish – simple and useful tips for any beginner

If you are a beginner in fishing or want to start preparing fresh fish for your friends, you are in the right place to learn how to clean it. It may sound complicated, but with a little practice and a few simple tips, you will be able to enjoy the special properties of fish.

How to clean fish: what you need to know depending on the source of the fish

Even if it seems a complicated process, cleaning the fish can become quite simple with a little training. It is true that it seems more difficult if it is the first time you do this, but, with time, you will gain dexterity and you will manage much faster.

After fishing, make sure you store the fish in an isothermal bag or crate. This will keep it fresh and fragrant. However, do not leave it for more than 2-3 hours without cleaning it, even if you plan to cook it later.

In order to preserve all its properties, it is recommended to consume the catch as soon as possible. In fact, nothing can compare to the fish prepared outdoors, at the campsite, after a fishing session with friends.

  • What to pay attention to if you choose to eat fresh fish

Make sure the fish is kept at the right temperature on an ice bed. There are some signs you can follow: to have clear and slightly swollen eyes, the gills to be pink or red and moist, and the scales and skin to have a metallic appearance. Fresh fish has a specific smell depending on its origin. A strong smell can be a sign that the fish is old. It is also recommended to cook it as soon as possible.

How to prepare for cleaning the fish

Whether you’ve fished or bought it, here are a few things you should consider before you start cleaning your fish:

  • Try to clean it as soon as possible to be sure of its freshness. In addition, if more time passes and the fish begins to dry out, the scales will be harder to clean.
  • Given that the cleaning process can be quite painstaking, try to do it outdoors or choose a place where you can run without fear of creating clutter around you.
  • Make sure you have access to running water before you start, as you will have plenty of it. Also, make sure you have paper towels on hand to dry.
  • Special knives for cleaning and threading can be very useful in this process.

Before preparing the fish, you need to know how to clean the scales, as well as how to gut and fillet. Here’s how to do these three steps:

  • Cleaning scales

Start by rinsing the fish with cold water to soften the scales. Place the fish on sheets of paper or a few newspapers, and in this way, you will be able to quickly clean the place, whether you are in the kitchen or camping. Hold the fish tightly by the tail and, using the edge of the knife, scrape the scales from tail to head. Rinse it under a stream of cold water and repeat the process on the other side. Make sure you remove all scales by running your hand over the surface of the fish.

  • Evisceration

Position the fish on the table and gently cut the abdomen from tail to head. You need to make a shallow cut so that you can remove gills, fins, organs, and fats well. It is important to remove everything from the inside of the fish until only the meat remains. Then rinse it with cold water to remove any remaining residue and wipe it with paper towels.

  • TAPPING

Use a threaded knife to cut from head to tail along the spine. Peel the meat lightly by hand. Repeat the process in reverse, so that you can remove the spinal cord and the fish’s head. Then remove the bones left in the meat. You will get a fish fillet ready to be cooked!

Fish is one of the healthiest foods, being an excellent source of protein. Moreover, fresh fish will contribute to a healthy diet. Don’t worry about the idea that this activity is dedicated to professionals. With training and patience, you will do better than you think.
